How to Get From Tokyo to Hakuba (Train vs Bus vs Rental Car)

If you're planning a ski trip to Hakuba, one of the first questions you'll face is how to get there from Tokyo.

Located in the Japanese Alps in Nagano Prefecture, Hakuba is around 270km from Tokyo and one of Japan's most popular ski destinations. Every winter, thousands of international visitors travel from Tokyo airports and hotels to the mountains for skiing, snowboarding, and winter holidays.

The three main ways to reach Hakuba are:

  1. Train

  2. Bus

  3. Rental Car

Each option has advantages depending on your budget, group size and travel plans.

In this guide, we'll compare all three so you can choose the best option for your trip.

Option 1: Train From Tokyo to Hakuba

For many visitors, the train is the most comfortable and reliable way to travel.

The typical route is: Tokyo Station (or the easier to navigate and less busy, Ueno Station) to Nagano Station on the Shinkansen aka “bullet train”. On this route, you can even catch a glimpse of Mt Fuji out the left-hand side as you speed through the outskirts of Tokyo.

After arriving in Nagano you can head to Hakuba by bus from the east exit of Nagano Station. Or, if you prefer, Hakucar offers car collection from Nagano Station so you can have one less transfer and head to your mountain destination directly.

This line, the Hokuriku Shinkansen, takes approximately 80–100 minutes to reach Nagano Station from Tokyo.

Pros

  • Fast travel time

  • Comfortable seating

  • Reliable even during heavy snowfall

  • Frequent departures

Cons

  • Multiple transfers, including a final bus leg to Hakuba

  • Can be expensive for families and groups

  • Less convenient if carrying large ski bags. There is not a lot of space

  • Limited flexibility once you arrive in Hakuba

Best For:

Couples, solo travellers, and visitors staying near a ski resort who don't plan on exploring beyond Hakuba.

A SECOND TRAIN OPTION: AZUSA EXPRESS FROM SHINJUKU TO HAKUBA DIRECTLY

This is the lesser known option that is becoming more popular in recent years. You can catch a direct train from Tokyo to Hakuba Train Station (where Hakucar can meet you with your rental or at your accomodation).

The JR Limited Express Azusa runs once daily at around 8am and directly from Shinjuku Station to Hakuba Station, making it one of the easiest and most comfortable ways to reach the mountains. Unlike the Shinkansen route via Nagano, there are no transfers – you simply board at Shinjuku Station, Tokyo, and arrive in Hakuba a few hours later. Note that seats can sell out during peak winter periods. So if you're travelling during the ski season, booking in advance is a good idea.

Pros

  • No transfers! A single trip

  • Arrive in downtown Hakuba from Shinjuku directly. You may even have time to ski a few laps in the afternoon

  • The scenery of the Japanese Alps south of Hakuba is breathtaking

Cons

  • This is a limited express train. It does not offer that classic Shinkansen experience

  • It takes a bit over 3 hours, so you’ll need something to occupy you

  • Reserved seats are a good idea

Best For:

Those staying near Shinjuku who want the convenience of a direct train to Hakuba first thing in the morning.

Option 2: Bus From Tokyo to Hakuba

Direct buses operate from various locations in Tokyo, including major train stations and both Narita and Haneda airports during winter. Travel time is somewhere between 4.5 and 6 hours depending on weather and traffic conditions. There are also overnight sleeper options available, if you’re comfortable sleeping on the bus.

You might choose the overnight buses to save on accommodation costs and maximise time on the slopes.

Pros

  • Usually the cheapest

  • Direct services available

  • No train transfers

  • Ski and snowboard luggage often accommodated

Cons

  • Longer travel time

  • Less comfortable than trains

  • Delays possible during winter storms

  • Fixed schedules and not-so-regular services

Best For

Budget-conscious travellers and visitors who want a simple point-to-point journey.

Option 3: Rental Car From Tokyo to Hakuba

Renting a car gives you the most flexibility and is becoming increasingly popular. The drive from the Tokyo area to Hakuba typically takes around 4–5 hours depending on traffic and weather conditions, and features a combination of toll freeways and smaller local roads. You could choose to collect a vehicle in Tokyo or rent from an airport location after arriving in Japan. Hakucar offers flexible, one-way rental from Tokyo area, including the airports. Please make this request when enquiring.

Pros

  • Complete flexibility to travel at your own pace

  • Easy transport of your own baggage

  • Convenient for families and small group

  • Ideal for exploring more locations, and beyond the ski resorts

Cons

  • Potentially higher upfront cost

  • Drivers need an International Driving Permit (for most nationalities)

  • Winter driving experience is recommended but not essential – the roads are well managed and snow tires plus AWD make a huge difference. Read our tips for winter driving here

  • Tolls and fuel costs are a factor

Best For

Families, groups of friends, and travellers planning to explore the wider Nagano region.

SO, DO YOU REALLY NEED A CAR IN HAKUBA?

This depends on the type of holiday you're planning. If you're staying right near a shuttle stop and spending every day at the closest ski resort, you may not need a vehicle.

However, many visitors discover that having a car makes a significant difference to their experience.

A car in Hakuba gives you access to:

  • Multiple ski resorts in a single trip

  • Local restaurants outside the main tourist areas

  • Day trips to Nagano City, Matsumoto Castle, the Snow Monkey Park

  • Access to nearby onsens

  • Hidden local attractions

Our guests tell us that having a car allowed them to experience much more of the region, and discover the best destinations, which they otherwise would not have been able to. Renting a car allows you to see more of the authentic Japan, away from the tourist bubble. If you want to see the real Japan, a car gets you better access.

TO RENT OR NOT TO RENT IN HAKUBA?

It’s true that there is no single best way to get from Tokyo to Hakuba – all work well. The right option depends on your budget, group size, and travel style.

For those who simply want to ski in one or two ski areas and return home, trains and buses are excellent choices. Keep in mind there are 10 ski areas in Hakuba. For travellers who seek the freedom to explore the Japanese Alps, visit authentic local attractions, and travel on their own schedule, a rental car often provides the best overall experience.

If you're considering driving during your Hakuba trip, be sure to book a winter-equipped vehicle and familiarise yourself with Japan's driving requirements before arrival.
