With your own wheels, you can easily visit all 10 ski resorts in the Hakuba Valley – plus discover lesser-known local spots that are less busy but no less fun. Enjoy the freedom to chase fresh snowfall, find cozy local eateries tucked away in the mountains, and shop for groceries without the hassle of carrying heavy bags.
On non-ski days, having a car lets you venture further – unwind in natural hot springs in the valley itself or go further to Omachi or Nozawa, stroll through historic Zenkoji Temple in Nagano, take in the beauty of Matsumoto Castle, or see the famous snow monkeys in Jigokudani on your own schedule.

Main requirements (what you’ll be asked for at pick‑up):
A valid driving credential accepted in Japan: typically an International Driving Permit (IDP) issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, OR a Japanese translation of your licence (or a converted Japanese licence). The JAF and Japanese police list these as the lawful ways to drive without a Japanese licence. (english.jaf.or.jp)
Your passport (or other proof of entry) to confirm the date you landed in Japan — we require this when you show an IDP because driving with an IDP is limited by date of entry. We may refuse service if entry cannot be verified.
The IDP’s validity limit: an IDP is generally valid for one year from its issue and typically allows driving in Japan for up to one year from your date of entry.
CAR rental iN HAKUBA – EXPLORE THE JAPANESE ALPS YOUR WAY
Choosing a car rental in Hakuba gives you the freedom to experience far more than the ski slopes. Instead of relying on busy shuttle buses or waiting for taxis, you can travel on your own schedule and discover everything the Hakuba Valley has to offer. We call it ‘going beyond the bus route’.
With a rental car in Hakuba, it's easy to visit all 10 Hakuba Valley ski resorts, chase the best snow conditions each day, and explore quieter local areas that many visitors never see. Stop at traditional restaurants, cafés, scenic lookouts and supermarkets whenever it suits you, rather than planning your day around transport timetables.
A Hakuba car rental also makes it easy to enjoy the wider Japanese Alps. Popular day trips include relaxing in nearby onsen, visiting the historic Zenkōji Temple in Nagano, exploring Matsumoto Castle, or seeing the world-famous Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park. Having your own vehicle means you can travel comfortably, carry your ski gear with ease, and discover places that are difficult to reach by public transport.
Why rent a car in Hakuba?
Hakuba is bigger than many visitors expect. The area is actually massive and vast. While buses and taxis are available, they don't always take you where you want to go, when you want to go. Some of the best restaurants, scenic spots, and hidden gems are off the beaten path and are easiest to reach by car. With a Hakuba car rental from Hakucar, you can explore Hakuba Valley and the wider Japanese Alps on your own schedule.
Planning your trip? Our Hakuba Guide covers driving in Japan, winter driving tips, local attractions, restaurant recommendations, and everything you need to make the most of your stay.
