Do You Need a Car to enjoy Hakuba?
We’re sure you’ve heard it from a friend or read it online. “You NEED a car in Hakuba!” said the anonymous stranger on an internet forum or your bestie who visited last year.
It’s one of the biggest questions you'll face: whether to rent a car or rely solely on buses and shuttles, or the occasional walk to the lifts. So, what’s the truth? Well, the answer depends on where you're staying, how long you're visiting, and what you want to see beyond the ski slopes (and on them too, in fact).
It’s true, a rental car offers the freedom to explore Hakuba at their own pace. But if you're staying in somewhere like Happo for Happo-One, Tsugaike village for Tsugaike, and the Green Plaza in Cortina, and only skiing at those locations, you may find that public transport is enough. But, if you want to get around easily and avoid crammed buses, you might need more options.
Here's what to consider before making your decision.
When You Probably Don't Need a Car
Hakuba has a network of shuttle buses during the winter ski season. Plus, some hotels also provide complimentary transport to nearby ski resorts. You can also try taxis, but be aware busy times can be tricky.
You may not need a rental car if you:
Are staying in Happo-One to ski/ride Happo-One. This logic applies to if you are staying at the base of any.
Plan to spend most of your time skiing or snowboarding one area.
Are happy to use resort shuttles and local buses. Keep in mind they do get busy, very busy.
Don't mind working around transport timetables. Shuttles run to a schedule. The smaller local shuttles are used for Happo/Iwatake/Goryu/Hakuba47, but you’ll be on the bigger buses for a Tsugaike or Cortina powder day.
For short stays focused entirely on the slopes nearby, this can be a convenient and cost-effective option.
When Renting a Car Makes Sense
A rental car becomes super valuable if you want flexibility during your trip.
You should consider renting a car if you:
Want to ski multiple resorts across the Hakuba Valley. Remember, there are 10, each with their own charm.
Are travelling with family or a larger group. It’s much easier to load up in your own car.
Need space for skis, snowboards and luggage. Get a car with ski/snowboard racks and you’ll love the convenience.
Plan to visit restaurants, onsens or attractions outside the main villages. The best is beyond the bus route!
Want to explore destinations near and far such as Matsumoto, Nagano City or the Snow Monkey Park. All are doable as day trips or even just an afternoon.
Are visiting outside the peak winter season when public transport is less frequent. The shuttles do change at different times.
Basically, if you prefer not to wait for buses or paying for multiple taxi journeys, you'll have the freedom to travel whenever it suits you with your own car. It helps with quick trips to the supermarket or Starbucks too!
Is It Easy to Drive in Hakuba?
Driving in Hakuba is generally straightforward. Roads are well maintained, and major routes are regularly cleared during the winter months.
For a visit during the snow season, a rental vehicle equipped with winter tyres is the number one most important feature. Tyres are even more important than AWD/4WD. You can get around fine in 2WD but AWD/4WD gives you extra piece of mind.
Depending on conditions and where you plan to drive, snow chains may also be recommended. Typically, the only place to carry back-up snow chains is the Donguri area, where the roads are steep and can be a little slick.
Most overseas visitors find driving in Hakuba comfortable, especially if they have experience driving in winter conditions. If you're new to driving on snow, taking extra care and allowing more time for your journeys is always advisable.

Can You Get Around Without a Car?
Yes, but there are some limitations. It’s these you’ll read online and, unfortunately, it’s not fake news. Hakuba’s buses and taxis get busy, very busy.
The shuttle network works for travelling between accommodation and ski resorts during winter. This is great, in theory, the only issue is when everyone has the same idea as you do. Also keep in mind that services become less frequent in the evenings and outside the main season.
If you’re keen for dining at different restaurants (there are some great ones that are away from the main hubs), visiting different hot springs, or exploring quieter areas of the valley, including small mountains that are great fun in a storm (see Kashimayari for a really fun day) you'll have far more flexibility with your own vehicle.
Is Renting a Car Worth It?
For couples or solo travellers staying close to their mountain of choice for just a few days, public transport may do the job for you. You will still get around fine.
But here is the but: If you're travelling with family, planning to visit several ski resorts, or want to explore everything the Hakuba region has to offer, and beyond, renting a car can make your holiday significantly easier and more enjoyable. In fact, you can’t really do all or any of the above without a car, and that’s the truth.
The convenience of travelling on your own schedule often outweighs the additional cost, particularly for longer stays. Remember, you’re on a holiday. Make it as good as it possibly can be.
